Long Branch, NJ – Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) on May issued the following statement after New Jersey Republicans held a partisan hearing on marine mammals and offshore wind:

“Republicans at the federal and state level need to stop their opposition to offshore wind. We know that the climate crisis is the biggest threat to marine mammals and their habitats. A moratorium on offshore wind will not stop the deaths of marine mammals. The food source whales depend on is moving closer to the busy shipping lanes near the Port of New York and New Jersey as ocean temperatures rise, leaving them vulnerable to vessel strikes and entanglements. More than 77 percent of injuries and deaths of the North Atlantic right whale were caused by vessel strikes and entanglements since 2017.

Republicans should join with Democrats in seeking solutions for the whales that slow down vessel speeds and prevent more plastics and marine debris from getting in their ocean habitat. Republicans should also join us in moving toward renewable energy sources and lessening our dependence on fossil fuels in order to prevent further warming of the planet.”
