“Derogatory names and symbols that invoke stereotypes of Native Americans are offensive and embody a shameful legacy of institutionalized mistreatment of this community. They are especially harmful to Native students and children, causing lower self-esteem and other psychological issues documented in scientific studies. These depictions and imagery also impact non-Native people by reinforcing negative stereotypes and misperceptions,” Pallone said. “It is extremely important that we remove these harmful symbols from our society and establish educational environments that are nurturing for all children, so that they obtain the tools to develop their sense of humanity and history unobstructed by defamatory symbols. This resolution reflects years of activism and research and provides critical Congressional support to address this reprehensible stain on our nation’s history.”

The resolution has the endorsement of the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI).
