Long Branch, NJ – Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) announced on June 14 that Perth Amboy has been awarded $40,909 in federal grant funding from the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program. The Borough will use the funding to send 18 firefighters to Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) class to become National Registry and New Jersey certified EMTs.

“This grant is great news for Perth Amboy. Our first responders perform incredible work every day to keep our communities safe and healthy,” said Pallone. “Every day, we ask our first responders to wear multiple hats and to be prepared for any type of emergency. This funding ensures these brave individuals have the training they need to respond to emergencies and help save lives. We are thankful for our first responders and their commitment to our community.”

“This grant will provide funding to put 18 Firefighters through the Emergency Medical Technician program to become certified EMTs. The Perth Amboy Fire Department responds as a first responder to all life-threatening medical emergencies throughout the city including motor vehicle accidents, cardiac & respiratory arrests, unresponsive & unconscious, overdoses, seizures, choking and any traumatic injury to name a few,” said Edward A. Mullen, Fire Chief. “This grant provides the necessary funding so that we are able to provide the highest level of patient care and can work hand-in-hand with Hackensack Meridian Health JFK EMS - the City’s EMS provider. We are grateful for the continued support from our elected officials and FEMA with this award as it will help us save lives.”

The AFG program is sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security and is part of a coordinated effort to improve the nation’s ability to respond to emergency situations. Since its implementation in 2001, the AFG program has provided over $8 billion to fire departments and EMS organizations across the country. Congressman Pallone has consistently supported the AFG program since its creation.
