Red Bank resident Edith A. Spinning completed "View of the Highlands and Sandy Hook" in 1892. Spinning's confident brushwork, strong yet subtle palette, and accomplished perspective indicate a truly talented artist. Spinning, the daughter of Benjamin Spinning and Amelia Patterson Spinning, married successful local dry goods businessman Alvin Whiting in 1911. Edith Spinning Whiting died in February 1917 after a skating accident, leaving behind her husband and three-year-old son Arthur Alvin Whiting.
