Have you ever started a craft project and never got around to finishing it? Well, people in the 19th century had the same experience! These strips, measuring about 16 x 2 inches, were gracefully embroidered with silk thread on linen canvas, and bound with narrow strips of white silk. They were intended for a pair of decorative men's suspender fronts but were never completed. Dating from about 1860, the pair were worked by one of the members of the Hartshorne family of Middletown and were eventually donated by Miss Louise Hartshorne in 1935. So the next time you're frustrated at not completing a craft project, remember these suspenders - unfinished for 162 years!
