October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and MCPO’s commitment to the cause involves getting out into the community to reach those we serve directly through education.

In was in that spirit that Monmouth County Child Advocacy Center (CAC) Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Coordinator Debbie Riveros was proud to participate in a brunch and panel discussion hosted by the newly launched Mercy Center Interfaith Coalition at Sisters Academy of New Jersey in Asbury Park on Saturday. Riveros, pictured here with Olga Starr of New Jersey Children's Alliance, manages the daily operations at the CAC, which was specially designed to serve children affected by child abuse, domestic violence, and neglect.

Domestic violence is an insidious crime that often presents unique challenges to investigations and prosecutions. Its prevalence also tends to often be underestimated – according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence on average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States, and during a year, this equates to more than 10 million individuals. An estimated 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner.
