Charles I. Newman, who served as “Moderator of the Day” in 1857, is being recognized as part of Wall Township’s 175th Anniversary Mayor Monday series. In the early years after Wall Township’s incorporation in 1851, the position of Moderator of the Day was similar to what is now known as Mayor. These individuals presided over Township Committee meetings and were responsible for overseeing budgets, establishing procedures, and ensuring effective municipal operations.
During Newman’s time in office, Wall Township was still developing its local government structure. Efforts included refining school districts, maintaining roads, and supporting a growing agricultural sector. Leaders such as Newman contributed to maintaining civic order and stability at a time when foundational governance practices were being established.
Although historical records from this period are limited, it is acknowledged that each Moderator played a role in shaping the township’s framework of governance that continues today.
“Every early leader helped lay another brick in the foundation of Wall Township.”
