This week in Monmouth County history.

Born June 3, 1959, known for NFL career from Neptune City

Samuel Davis Mills Jr. was born on June 3, 1959, in Neptune City, New Jersey. He grew up nearby in Long Branch and developed his skills in football and wrestling at Long Branch High School. Mills played college football at Montclair State University, where he set records for tackles and earned defensive honors. He began his professional career in the USFL, winning two championships with the Philadelphia/Baltimore Stars. Mills later played 12 seasons in the NFL as a linebacker for the New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers. He was known for his leadership and consistency, earning five Pro Bowl selections. After retiring as a player, Mills became a coach for the Panthers. Despite being diagnosed with cancer in 2003, he continued coaching until his death on April 18, 2005. Mills’ connection to Neptune City remains part of his legacy as a dedicated athlete and mentor.
